Holy. Flipping. Heck. This episode was utterly, utterly incredible.
Unfortunately, to describe why would be filled with spoilers. So into the extended entry we go!
Dumas and Thoma fight for Helga, but Dumas has the upper hand thanks to being superhuman. Undeterred, Thoma and co. head off to find Helga once more, but Thoma is strangely entranced when he discovers Tina's body in one of those giant cylinders. The sight of it brings back Thoma's repressed memories...
HE'S SETH! Bloody Nora, I half-expected it, but it's so gut-wrenchingly sad. Consumed with jealousy over how Tina loved Soran more than him, he shot Soran. Overwhelmed with grief, Seth is also shot by Georca's forces, and finally pushes the button to allow Tina's spirit to be transferred to Earth. Paralysed by shock, Thoma's hair turns white...
Dumas finally defies Georca for once, and after being beaten Helga attempts to stand up for him to no avail. Finally they bond as brohter and sister, and Helga beseeches him not to go through with his plan to kill Georca - however, Dumas knocks Helga out, and as Thoma is wracked with guilt over his past transgressions Dumas teleports outside the ship to finish his machinations...
My already disturbing obsession with Fantastic Children increased about ten thousand fold with this episode. Somehow even the veeeery slowly paced section at the beginning which is just Thoma walking incredibly slowly up to Tina's statue held me utterly enraptured, and Junko Minagawa's voice acting was an absolute tour-de-force effort throughout the episode. With only two episodes left to go I'm absolutely DYING (no pun intended) to know what happens next.
I'm hoping Bandai announce something about a release date at Anime Boston for the DVDs - I can't wait to buy the show. Superb stuff.
Posted by BluWacky at April 30, 2005 02:30 PM | TrackBackI should never have watched the series raw, because somehow my mindset changes when I watch things raw and the whole thing seemed a little draggy without subtitles. But yeah, in the end I was going "WTF"...
I bet you will hate the ending though. I hated it quite a bit >_>;
Posted by: wao at April 30, 2005 03:04 PMJust a lurker here- I *totally* agree. This episode has been a very beautifully done one, even with all the quivering eye shots. At this point, I don't care if the ending's bad or not- the journey there's been enjoyable enough.
Curiously enough, I was banking on Thoma being Soran and, uh... (don't laugh) Chitto being Sesu. It would've explained his insane wish to always help out Helga. Maybe it's the opposite way around, or Chitto's simply on for the ride.
I think this is definitely more interesting, however, than my lil' theory.
Posted by: matildarose at May 1, 2005 02:55 AMAnother lurker drawn out by this episode. While I don't really have anything of substance to say, I had to add my voice to those enrapt by this episode. I'm really going to be sad to see this series end. It's been a long time since I've looked foreward to the next episode of anything this much.
Posted by: Emerson at May 1, 2005 08:37 AMI agree with matildarose, I really thought Thoma was Soran. Of course my only reasoning was that in the flashbacks, Soran as a kid (when he meets Tina) looks identical to Thoma, except for that whole being part metal thing.
I don't think Chitto is anyone reincarnated, but I do want to know how Sesu was transfered to the Earth Zone.

I had a feeling that Thoma would turn out to be either Soran or Sesu, but I was leaning more towards Soran as he looked almost identical to Thoma when he was younger. I liked how the anime played with your head there ^_^.
I also like the direction the anime went here. If Thoma was Soran, that would have been so ideal and cheesy IMO. 'His love was so strong, it crossed time and space.' No, instead it was Sesu's feelings of frustration and agony that survived for so long and followed Tina all the way to Earth. I just find that really interesting.
That was an incredible episode... it's slow pacing just added to its coolness. I can't wait for the fansubs of the last two... ^_^.
Posted by: BakaKage at May 5, 2005 12:31 AMAt this point, I wonder if there is any sign indicating that Jim (the man who died for Serafine's handkerchief) or Aaron (Christina's student) is Sesu. Or is it just assumed?
Posted by: Ed at May 9, 2005 03:21 AMThis is just the best anime series I ever watched....I can't wait untill they release episode 25 and 26!I also thought Thoma was Soran, how sad, how melodramatic! It just adds to the beauty of the story:)
I only wonder how Sesu got to earth, and if Sesu could, what about Soran?
Aargh, I want to see episode 25 en 26!
Posted by: Marianne at May 9, 2005 09:28 AMI just watched this episode...no. How can he be Seth?! He's supposed to be Soran! Soran! Now who is going to turn out to be Soran, Chitto? It's not right.
I guess that I just really liked the idea of Thoma being Soran, they did hint it with the two looking so similar. With all of the disappointment I feel with the series right now, I must admit Junko Minagawa's voice acting was amazing, probably the best I've heard for a male character.
Posted by: maromi at May 15, 2005 07:27 AMI figured Thoma is more likely to be Sesu than Soran sometime ago (and I WANTED him to be Sesu, dang. I really like Sesu, and it adds a whole new level of conflict for Thoma's character), although I was still thinking PERHAPS he could be Soran, judging from his looks.
Still, the scene hit home. His voice acting performance was superb.
Posted by: SummerWolf at May 17, 2005 07:52 AMYes this episode was awesome. It makes me love Fantastic Children thousands of times more than I really did, but I still loved it before.
I wanted Thoma to be Sesu, because I don't really like Soran and Tina should be together with Sesu because he was always there for her and loves her. I mean, she only saw Soran for like 2 days (not really sure, but I am sure that it wasn't as long as she'd known Sesu) and says, "Oh, I love you!"
I cannot wait to see the next episode. Unfortunately, I've gotta go to sleep now, but I still can't wait. This episode just made my heart feel so weird in so many places...
