Darker Than Black Episode 2 - The Star of Contract Fell… 2nd Half

Hei continues to protect and hide Chiaki as both the police and the French Contractors attempt to follow the trail. However, all is not as it seems with Chiaki or the research on Hell’s Gate she holds, and a standoff between Hei and Jean and his cronies ends unexpectedly as the truth about Chiaki is revealed.
I continue to find DtB a rather fascinating show. Beyond the overall slickness of the production, it’s mostly the writing that really convinced me here; the danger with the biepisodic format is that the pacing could be all over the place, but I really like how the writers played this episode and it definitely had an unexpected twist to it.
My one concern is that most arcs will be damsel-in-distress stories, as the preview for the next one seems to suggest (although I hope to be proven wrong when I get around to watching episode 3). Maybe Hei’s contract is to pull as many broads as possible (or maybe get melancholy over their deaths?) but although such stories work for James Bond films they don’t have a new one out every week like DtB does. Nevertheless, on the strength of these first two episodes I think that Bones can pull off whatever they decide to do.
