Kissdum Engage Planet Episode 1 - The End
No OP or ED worth talking about, although we will have Jikuu wo Koete (TWO-MIX DELTA) for an OP eventually; it’s a brilliantly cheese-tastic song.

This is NOT an easy entry to write…
Anyway, 22 years before Kissdum is set there was some kind of massive boat accident involving a creature from the bottom of the sea. Fastforward to the present and killer insects called Hadeans are attacking Japan, which is defended by the NIDF. For some reason our main character, Shuu Aiba, is in a straightjacket (much like I feel I should be after watching this!), but gets busted outwhen the insects start invading every structure around; meanwhile, his love interest, Rukina, has managed to recover the “Book of the Dead”, which is actually an ornate knife, from the bottom of the sea. Some stuff happens involving some good dogfighting and a whole load of totally and utterly random sequences occur throughout the episode, but essentially it ends with Aiba being killed by a Hadean and Rukina resurrecting him through stabbing him with the knife; quite how we got there I have no idea, though.
Some of you out there may have watched the first episode of Touka Gettan, and been completely thrown by the deliberately vague structure where nothing is explained and nothing really makes sense (very reminiscent of the director’s previous work, Yamibou). Kissdum can join the same club; I’m sure every sequence in this episode would be pretty good if it actually went in a sensible order, but as it is it’s like watching a trainwreck; it’s hard to believe that an episode can be strung together in such a haphazard and badly laid out way.
Which is a real shame, actually. The CG is absolutely fantastic, really some of the best stuff I’ve ever seen in a TV anime, and although the cel animation isn’t fantastic it’s not really all that bad and the actual art design is really good; I love the creature design for teh Hadeans. It’s just the script is a total shambles, really, despite the germs of some decent ideas in there; it’s as if we’re supposed to know all about the characters already even though the show doesn’t start in media res, they’re just given absolutely no character exposition or anything and it’s totally mindboggling.
I’m hoping Kissdum can pull itself together a bit for episode two (or three, maybe) as I really want to give it a chance; the CG’s well done, and I like some of the ideas in the show. I just can’t help but think it’s all been slapped togeteher at the last minute, as the rumours have suggested, and it’s going to be a tragic load of rubbish!
