Code Geass Episode 4 - His Name is Zero

He wears a goldfish bowl on his head
Coloured black like it’s something dead
IT’S ZERO!

He needs a theme tune, does that man.

Anyway, Lelouch masterminds yet another cunning plan to free Suzaku, who turns out to be equally as noble-born as Lelouch, but his pious do-goodiness means he returns to face his sham trial. Also Joji Nakata is in this show, which makes it better by a thousand-fold amounts.

I’m rather glad for the little “surprise” at the end of this episode, because if the show were to just be the JLF versus Britannia I’d get exceedingly bored extremely quickly; essentially, it would be Gundam all over again, which ain’t my cuppa tea. As it is, Lelouch’s mindboggling audacity and excellent voice acting skills are entertaining enough in the short term but I hope we get to see some point to the other school characters existing and a bit more out of Suzaku than being idiotically pure all the time.

  1. If you are expecting anything more than that out of Suzaku, then you’ll probably be waiting until the end of this season (assuming he doesn’t, you know, die). They are at least getting around to justifying the other school characters existances.

If its any consolation, the show definately doesn’t look like its turning into a Gundam show stylistically. I do think you might struggle with the next couple of episodes - 5 is very Suzaku-centric (and a lot of that centers on him being idiotically pure), and 6 has a large helping of wacky school hijinks. If you can make it through those two (and psuedo-recap 8.5) then the shows knocks things up another gear.
