Honey and Clover II Chapter 8

Hagu and Takemoto prepare to graduate at long last; Takemoto wants to return to temple reconstruction, whilst Hagu will head back to Nagoya and Ayu is remaining in Tokyo (I presume she’s still a grad student, right? Can you get doctorates in pottery? I wouldn’t know, I can’t draw stick men properly…) However, a horrible accident in a storm lands Hagu in hospital; can she face the possibility that she will never paint again?

This episode struck several chords with me; the graduation part is a very sore spot having just left university, but Hagu’s accident is particularly touching. You never know when bizarre things like that are going to happen, really, and whilst on the one hand you can write it off as melodrama to generate audience interest in the last arcs of the series, incredibly unfortunate things like this do happen.

Whilst some have reckoned the relatively chirpy insert song playing over the accident sequence spoils the mood, I happen rather to like it. It fits with the rest of the scene in how everyone’s just going about their normal lives regardless and how the world is just randomly cruel; the sequence is well directed (at least JC Staff know how to choreograph to music effectively, hem hem Simoun opening sequence animators hem hem!) and just as touching. Besides, we’ve had enough bittersweet Spitz for one lifetime (just thinking of the Yoru wo Kakeru sequence in the car back in Season 1 gets me slightly misty eyed…)

  1. Ah, Yoru wo Kakeru, I think it’s the best insert song.. (though I also like everything else indiscriminately..) I didn’t expect the accident either, tragedy just didn’t come to mind coz this anime is just sweet…
