Demonbane Episode 1 - I Am Providence

It’s Call of Cthulhu: The Mecha Show!

Except it’s a bit boring. Boo! I went into Demonbane with mixed expectations, and at first thought I was going to quite like the show; the opening half of the episode is quite interesting, with our hero Kuro getting an assignment from Koyasu-san the Mysterious Butler (and some big-breasted girl whose name I never caught) to find a magical book and a whole load of women with massive gazongas along the way. Now they were all mysterious and relatively adult so I was quite enjoying this bit.

But then, whilst things should have got more exciting when Al Azif, a super-powerful animate book-thing, appears on the scene and reacts with Kuro to turn him into an uber-bishounen mage and stuff, somehow Demonbane became completely uncompelling. Al Azif is an annoying pink-haired squeaky-voiced little girl whose introduction involves falling crotch-first onto Kuro, and the villain of this episode, Dr. West, is “wacky” in a way that causes kittens to weep me to want to rip out my fingernails. All the mystery and excitement somehow seems to deflate from the episode when Al Azif turns up, despite all the magic spells and mecha summoning; I suddenly couldn’t bring myself to care any more.

Ah well, it’s not like I needed a new series to try anyway with the summer coming up, but after deciding to drop Saiunkoku Monogatari for good (watched episode 3, was unfortunately bored silly) I thought I’d give something completely different a shot; what a shame.

  1. The whatever-it-is in the second screencap reminds me of DD from Figure 17. with the whole grey skin and green hair thing going on.

Also, I’m really tired of the “squeaky voiced little girl” characters in anime, especially when combined with “humerous” innuendo.

  2. I felt the same way after watching ep 1 hence giving up as well XD
