Yoshinaga-san’chi no Gargoyle (The Yoshinaga Family Gargoyle) Episode 1 - The Yoshinaga Family Pebble

OP - Ohayou (the main female characters) - relatively standard anime OP, with that annoying habit that avex mode have of doing group songs where they just sing in unison the whole way through. Nicely animated, though.

ED - Ai ni Oide, Ai ni Oide (main female characters once more) - just the next episode preview playing under the credits, I didn’t really listen to or watch this I’m afraid…

We’re dumped in media res here, as we’re rapidly introduced to a cast of characters including Futaba, the incredibly violent little girl who’s the main character, the Gargoyle she won in a lottery who protects the family home with laser beam eyes and so forth, and a bunch of others. We then get stuck straight into some kind of plot, with burglars attacking the neighbourhood and especially Futaba’s friend Mimori; when her dog Avery fails to ward off some burglars Gargoyle has to come to the rescue, but this causes Angst; the episode ends with Futaba kidnapped by someone mysterious and Gargoyle and Mimori worrying about her.

Hmm. I was expecting this to be quite different from how it turned out - I thought this was going to be more of a straightforward comedy, but it’s already pretty dramatic. It’s also not quite as moe-fetishistic as I was expecting; the character designs are very cutesy but there’s no “fanservice” of any kind, really.

With that said, dumping you straight into the plot doesn’t really work that well in this show - they began with that old chestnut, the “dramatic end of series flashback”, and then just filled in details along the way in the episode itself, and I think I’d have preferred a more straightforward approach since there’s quite a few characters to keep track of and you don’t really get to see a lot of them here. Not that I’ll be watching any more, though - although Yoshinaga-san’chi no Gargoyle isn’t a bad little show, it feels a bit… not generic, per se, but there’s nothing especially exciting or invigorating about the show. It’s a fun bit of fluff, but nothing really grabbed me about it either, so I guess it’s not for me; Matthew will no doubt keep you all up-to-date on the show!
