Ergo Proxy Episode 5 - TASOGARE

Woody (who may be called Foody, actually, but I can’t read the tiny katakana in the ED properly) lies to the inhabitants of the commune that Vincent is a revolutionary and they’ll all get to go back to live in Romdo, pretending his CD player is a radio in contact with the city - however, Queen is suspicious, and Vincent wants no part in it. When Lil turns up unexpectedly to reclaim Vincent, things start to unravel for Woody, and things only worsen when the Intelligence Agency sends attack robots to hunt Vincent down. However, Vincent’s mysterious good fortune seems to materialise before Lil once more, leaving us with questions as to who exactly he is, while Pino makes a friend and learns about original thought before tragedy strikes…
This episode was surprisingly funny, considering it was also the most depressing episode so far. Pino spent most of it drawing silly pictures and playing that harmonica-thing of hers to piss off Woody, and the three random gullible old villagers cooking stuff were an odd choice. It didn’t really feel like the previous few episodes in that everything was focused on one location and we didn’t get quite so many intertwining plot threads, but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, just a bid different.
The mystery of Vincent continues to deepen! Well, only slightly - the connection between him and Ergo Proxy is made yet more explicit, but still slightly confusing (I’ll let you judge for yourself what you think). I still wish he’d keep his eyes open more of the time - it’s really, really disconcerting spending so much time watching someone who looks like a gerbil for most of the episode…

I believe he is actually Hude. After Henri Hude, an obscure French writer (just like Joe Bousquet from the last episode).

…do you think it’s supposed to be Quine, not Queen? I always thought Quine was pronounced Q-why-ne, though. Might make sense given all the other names in this show…
Cheers for the info, how do you KNOW all this stuff? :p

Ah, if you only knew the power of the Dark Side (google). 8)
As for Willard von Quine, his last name is indeed pronounced as [k-wai-n]. Either this is a pecularial case of reverse Engrish, or it’s someone else.
Unfortunately, there are too many Queens, Quinns and other such fellows associated with literary world to make a definitive guess here. But I will keep on searching. 8)

The bald guy is called フーディ (from ED Credits). I you google the katakana, you will get lots of online sites selling Hoody or Hoodie. I doubt is Hude since H is silent in French. The red-haired woman is クイン (from ED credits), which sounds more like Quinn, Quinne than Queen クイーン.

I propose the theory that Ril emanates a sort of aura that makes Vincent close his eyes. Because she’s, you know, teh leet strong woman and all of that.
Dammit, here I was hoping we’d see his eyes open!
Never mind, I’m sure he’ll be able to open them around Ril by the end of the show. No, he has to.
For the record it seems like “Hude” is romanised as ユード, which would fit closer with my scanty knowledge of evil French pronounciation, where “Hude” would probably sound like “Yuude”.
I guess they’re not referring to a philosopher here? Ultimately we’ll know when the R1s come out, I guess.

I always thought that it was Hude, not only because that’s what I saw in the translation, but it definitely sounds like Hude. On the other hand, I do agree that Lil sounds better than Real (even if her confirmed name is Real, as that’s what’s written on her ID card).
Anyway, having only a scarce understanding of the language, I watched a raw version of this episode anyway, since it hasn’t been translated yet. While I understood the gist of what was happening, now I know what they were all arguing over. I’ll just wait for the fansubs to appear more often, but this series is getting so interesting now, and makes me want to know more.
Er, and I also agree, Vince needs to keep his eyes open more often. Not only are green eyes smexy, he looks more like a normal human being.

In this episode, we’re also told about a “400 usagi” which seems to be that kind of ship shown in the opening. I figure out that the thing Pino descovered while diving in the water must be it because, at the end of the episode, beside what happens, you can see a hidden ship under the water.
Anyway, I just like how clues (which aren’t essential ones) are put in this serie.

nice review!, damn, ergo proxy looks good, Lil is sucha perfect character, and Vincent too, the scene where he talks with Hude, next to timothy and pino, he keeps his mouth under his clothes, it’s a perfect example of “humanity” of the characters on ergo proxy…
and what the hell is going on with the proxy!, Hude said that the proxy isnt a monster, and that he is not just one person. I wanna see ep 6!!
cool blog, I’m not a anime fanboy, but ergo proxy makes me feel good :)

Amazingly someone made the connection between the 400 rabbits and possibly the ship. The 400 rabbits is a group of deities from Aztec mythology. Also, at the last scene, Timmy’s last drawing shows Vince and Lilu riding a flying rabbit. I hope that the 400 rabbits refer to the ship, not 400 cases of Tequila.

Hi! Just wondering, don’t you think Lil looks like Amy Lee of Evanescence on the ‘Fallen’ cover? All the blue make-up and stuff… You can see the pic here: [http://www.dailyvault.com/2003_08_07-jb.html]

Vincent should keep his eyes open and ruffle his hair a bit. Just like in the OP. He actually looks cool in the OP. Vincent with carefully combed-and-gelled hair and a Brock-syndrome (eyes forever closed) is just ugh.

something i noticed- they can’t end an episode without Vincent falling from a cliff or something ‘-.-
