Cluster Edge Episode 3 - Cold Bullets

One of the teachers at Cluster EA, the bird-loving Haematite (wow, that brings back memories of chemistry lessons doing endless amounts of copper extraction. Not the bird-loving bit.), is/was in love with Chalcedony (oh, sorry, JUST BEST FRIENDS), and is thus devastated when he hears from an old “friend”, Vesuvia, that Chalce died in the plane crash from the first episode. He spends a great deal of the episode angsting, especially when he finds out that Agate had something to do with it.

Of course, Vesuvia is in league with the military (with a name like that, of COURSE he is), and ALSO fancied Haematite but Chalce got in the way. Turns out Vesuvia is the one who originally shot Chalce down, and is dispatched to assassinate Beryl - Haeme gets in the way to protect him from the bullet, but it takes Agate turning on his Jaundice Shield and going ninja-style on the accompanying soldiers and airships to rescue them (although he gets washed away down the river in the process…)

Man, Cluster EA’s security must suck if an obviously armed military contingent can get in that easily. Surely they have protocols for that kind of thing?

This episode was pretty boring until the end, to be honest. The animation was curiously inconsistent (Agate bobs up and down as he walks over a hill at one point, and then is fluidly beating people up like nobody’s business a single cut later) and I think I’ve probably overdosed on stereotypical Bishounen Angst episodes in the past so fail to find Haeme’s PAIN particularly exciting.

I liked the cheesy music, though, and the fight sequence was cool. One wonders if they’re ever actually going to explain anything about Agate, though - all he does is be chirpy and obsessed with flying without any kind of characterisation beyond that, and then goes occasionally postal. I suppose they’re still introducing most of the characters (at least next episode brings back Chrome and his armoured ninja buddies!) but it wouldn’t hurt to develop things a bit more I reckon.
