Shakugan no Shana Episode 3 - The Torch and the Flame Haze

Shana takes on Hirai’s identity in order to stay close to Yuuji, as the Crimson Denizens will be hunting him down for the treasure he holds. Hijinks Ensue, as Shana acts like a sour little cow for most of the day and even bitchslaps her teacher (when she’s not being curiously bi-polar with melon bread), until Marianne makes another go at trying to off Yuuji; in the ensuing battle, Marianne’s master finally reveals himself to Shana as Friagne, and Alastor is revealed as one of the Lords of the Crimson World (so quite why he’s helping to bring them down we don’t know yet). After Shana fends them off for now (because Marianne is a pretty crap demonic dolly) Yuuji donates some of his existence energy to heal his friends who were caught in the crossfire and set everything back to normal, once more surprising Shana who reckons he’s not your average Torch.
Meanwhile, there are two new players on the scene - an old man gathering flickering Torches in some kind of ball of string, and a busty woman named Marjorie who comes with an annoying talking book.
Now I know why the fight sequences look so good. Because the background artwork and school scenes look like ASS! How did they get away with not animating any contours into Yuuji’s ears? I hope they fix that for the DVD release…
Anyway, a fairly average episode really, we didn’t get a lot further than we already had with the plot (despite finding out a bit about Alastor and the nature of his relationship with Shana) and there were the aforementioned animation problems. Plus Yuuji is still annoying. But hey, it’s only three episodes in, and one mixed episode out of three isn’t bad. This episode DID give us the possibly unintentionally hilarious moment where Yuuji drags an immobilised friend out the door like a big ol’ pillar…
