Happy 7 The TV Manga Episode 1 - The Seven Daughters of Good Fortune

OP - Akiramenai de (Little Non) - the animation is surprisingly decent, but the whole thing is just so generic. This will be a running theme…
ED - funny girl (Luce) - chibis and a song with girls going “yay yay yay” in the background, you can imagine the rest for yourself.

Amano Sakogami has phenomenal bad luck. Her luck gets even worse, however, when after dreaming of the year 1333 AD and a revolution by an eeeevil magician, she sees a bright red light coming from her school and somehow ends up smack bang in the middle of a battle between the forces of good and evil, represented by a band of super-powered girls calling themselves Happy Seven and an evil girl with a fan called Kokuanten. Amano gets rescued by a jolly young knight who then hypnotises her with a magatama into believing it’s all a dream, however, and despite the nagging suspicion something’s up she goes to school as normal.

It does, of course, turn out that all these people go to Amano’s school. Happy Seven run the Good Fortune Club, and the knight is a guy named Kikunosuke whom Amano decides she’s in love with by the end of the episode, but that’s getting ahead a bit. Anyway, Amano pratfalls into the Club’s headquarters, where they analyse her and find she has a cloud of bad luck surrounding her. They suggest she prays at a local shrine, and the bad luck manifests itself as an evil bug monster that tries to attack Amano - of course, Happy Seven (and their two random hangers-on, one who analyses the bug monster with her palmtop Sailor Mercury style, the other who traps it in a giant forcefield) are on hand to save the day, and the episode ends with them facing off against the creature.

There’s nothing wrong with Happy Seven per se. It doesn’t have any exploitative fanservice, the humour (while pretty lame and cliched) isn’t overly forced, the seiyuu are doing an okay job and the animation is generally pretty good. However, watching it made me feel like I was back in the mid 90s again, everything about it feels…not exactly cliched (although it is, pretty much), but just a bit old and worn. You’ve probably seen shows with this kind of atmosphere a million times before, and I can’t say that there’s any real reason to watch yet another one. It’s not bad, but it’s just not very interesting I’m afraid.

I have to say that, every time they mentioned bad luck, I wished I was watching Aquarion instead. Fukou ne…

  1. hmm, might go d/l for an impression watch, then dump it. More better animes coming soon :).

  2. This anime is pretty typical for Trimark Entertainment, which seems to specialize in late night anime with no special qualities. I would note, however, that the henshin sequence does have significant fan service.

  3. i like this TV show
