Toshokan Sensou Episode 2 - Library Task Force

Iku starts her training with the Library Task Force (which also seems to mean she spends all her time in the stacks of the library when she’s not defending it; one wonders what work she was actually doing before?) alongside the “perfect” new recruit Tezuka (who nonetheless is afraid of heights). We run through the usual arc for such things - Iku feels worthless, Tezuka can’t stand her, redemption through an attempt to raid the library at the end brings new respect from Tezuka - but hey, the production values and writing are pretty damn good so who am I to complain?

As seems to be echoed throughout the Internet (or at least the parts of it that I read) the premise is still very, very stupid. That said, this episode seemed much stronger than the first despite the rather cliched Tezuka parts of the episode. I think perhaps the show benefits from not being adapted from a manga, so the director is able to have the show look and feel the way he wants it to; there’s no denying the quality of the animation, for instance, and the flow of the episode is perfect. I just have difficulty buying that none of the legal and political ramifications of having all these regional libraries fighting against the government seem to have occured and it’s all just accepted as being the way things work. Still, at least the show’s pretty entertaining.
