Macross Frontier Episode 3 - On Your Marks

Macross Frontier reminds me so much of…something. I don’t mean that I think it’s a rip off (although it apparently is), but it’s the almost giddy storytelling style. Every scene in this episode is infused with something that makes it significant in some way, whether it’s cheesy fanservice jokes or beautiful singing or plot movement to get Alto in the SMS, it doesn’t feel like there’s a wasted moment. On top of that, everything’s just so beautiful…

I’m sorry, I got carried away there. But it’s all so SHINY! I don’t know what Satelight are doing, it’s not like every new show looks like this, but everything seems to coruscate in my mind.

I guess there was some lame stuff in this episode - the airlock scene was pretty cheesy, really, although I’ll give it a pass because it’s Macross Frontier, and it’s not like anything really momentous has actually happened here. I think all of that is just blown out of the water by Ranka singing Aimo for the umpteenth time, though - I don’t care if Yoko Kanno stole it from a struggling Armenian indie folk-punk group or wherever she plagiarises her stuff from, I’m not ashamed to admit that said scene made me cry. I am SUCH a wuss.
