Kekkaishi Episode 10 - Shikigami Chocolate Battle

While Yoshimori uses a shikagami to try and get some amazing chocolate cake, Tokine’s cockroach phobia gets the better of her.

Despite the somewhat brief description, this is a really, really good episode. Sure, it’s still “filler” per se in that there’s no plot, but it’s a wonderful exploration of the more light-hearted side of Kekkaishi and the relationship between Tokine and Yoshimori, which is one of the most enjoyable things about the show. Normally I’d be begging for more characters in a shounen fight show because the leads are usually obnoxious, but although I look forward to Gen’s arrival in the show at some point (episode 21, I believe?) I’m perfectly content with Kekkaishi as it is for now.

  1. I think that’s the best thing about Kekkaishi - the amazing balance between humour, combat and the little slice-of-life drama/interaction. And each and every one of them are done so well.

I wouldn’t strictly call these episodes fillers; even though they’ve got no plot progression, they give us a lot of insights into the characters and their relationships, which is as good as if not better than plot progression imo. And there’s going to be a lot more of these kind of episodes between here and episode 21.
