Soukyuu no Fafner Episode 21 - Future - Sakura

January 23rd, 2005

The Festum counterattacks are all going swimmingly, so Michio and Yumiko organise a special training night to get the group to “make memories” - i.e. Yumiko wants to set up couples. Of course they are at least partially successful, and their own relationship takes a new turn - but things are not quite so simple for Sakura, for whom something is drastically wrong…

Ouch, what an ending. Suffice to say Sakura’s voice actress gets a gold star for this episode. Just when everything was going well and all. Only four more episodes left until the end of the series, I’ll be surprised if everything gets wrapped up properly so we’ll have to wait and see!

Soukyuu no Fafner Episode 20 - Light - Lamp Light

January 17th, 2005

The island holds a Lantern Festival of some kind to commemorate those who have died so far in conflict with the Festum. The following day, Kouyou breaks loose from his confinement and starts wandering around Tatsumiya - do the islanders exterminate him as a Festum threat, or is there some hope of humanity left in him?

What do you think? This was a cheese-tastic episode for the sheer angst level of the end, with everyone weeping bucket loads, but it’s still nice to see the characters developing even at this late stage in the series, especially given that soon I suspect it’ll be crunch time for a lot of them. Interesting development on the whole Festum assimilation front, too.

Soukyuu no Fafner Episode 19 - Look - Maya

December 31st, 2004

I’m taking the events of the last episode for granted, so don’t read on if you’re worried about Fafner spoilers.

Maya’s pilot simulation is a success, but the process intoxicates her and she has to be carried home. The evening is a time for families - Yumiko attempts to set up Maya and her mother with Kazuki and Commander Makabe, while Canon continues to attempt to adjust to life outside the military. The following day, however, a Festum attack occurs once more, and Maya has to prove herself once again - but there may be danger from within once more…

I love writing stupid cliffhanger endings to my recaps, I really do. Strangely, though, the scriptwriters put the cliffhanger at the eyecatch rather than the end, rather bizarrely, although it was a pretty nifty one. Anyway, hurrah for Maya getting to be incredibly cool! (although it’s been bloody obvious since the beginning it would happen eventually). But where will the story go from here, with only seven episodes remaining? Hopefully not another SHUT UP arc, anyway.

Soukyuu no Fafner Episode 18 - Memories - Father

December 23rd, 2004

The New UN soldiers that were left behind begin to adjust to their new lifestyles, while Yumiko moves in with Michio and Canon lives in Shouko’s house. The youngsters all head down to the beach for a while, but their momentary happiness is squashed on the arrival of Maya’s dad, who defected to the New UN some years ago…

Soukyuu no Fafner Episode 17 - Trick - Survival

November 10th, 2004

You can tell that there have been Plot Developments when the series slightly changes its OP… at this point, I’m warning everyone that I’m going to refer to Tatsumiya’s Core by her actual name in recapping the episode, only her first name but you’ll still probably be able to guess which family she’s in.

Anyway. Kazuki gets plonked in solitary confinement for running away, but at Maya’s instigation gets a hilarious visit from Soushi that cheers him up slightly (incidentally, at this point there is nothing you can say that will make me think that Soushi is not completely infatuated with Kazuki. Nothing at all. It’s gone beyond suggestive.). Meanwhile Maya carries on moaning about how she doesn’t get to do anything - look, we know, we sympathise, I actually quite like you, but STOP WHINING - and the big drama of the episode comes when the UN General sets Tatsumiya’s Fenrir system off - the autodestruct thing from back in episode 6, remember? Michio gets very wound up over this and goes to blow up the Fenrir missiles with help from Tsubaki, while Kanon needs a motivational speech from Kazuki to remember that she’s alive (…) and probably to switch allegiance - of course, the island doesn’t explode, and they all live happily ever after. Until the next episode of gloom and angst, anyway.

So the first half of the series was SHUT UP SOUSHI, the next bit seems to be SHUT UP MAYA, and I can definitely see me getting around to SHUT UP KAZUKI at some point given his obsession with conversation and talking to make people feel alive or whatever. I seriously can’t wait for the DVDs to hear whatever kind of “Oirish” accent they give Kanon (what kind of an Irish name is that?) now, especially since all her character flaws this episode stem from instituionalisation on an unbelievable scale - are we really supposed to believe that she’s incapable of acting without orders?
